South Mumbai’s Elevated Jungle Walk Nears Completion

The elevated jungle walkway at Malabar Hill, a highly anticipated urban development project, is rapidly approaching its completion. The innovative walkway, which extends above the ground, is designed to offer an immersive experience within the lush greenery of the Malabar Hill forest adjacent to Siri Road.

Architect and urban planner Kadri, who has been instrumental in this project, confirmed that approximately 80 per cent of the construction work is now complete. “The raised walkway, which is primarily constructed from Malaysian teakwood supported by steel columns, is progressing well,” Kadri stated. The walkway, which spans 450 metres (approximately 1,476 feet) and varies in width up to 1.5 metres (about five feet), is set to offer both aesthetic and functional benefits. Kadri’s vision for this project was influenced by his childhood experiences in the area.

Recalling the once-neglected space that he frequently visited, Kadri was inspired by the tranquillity of the forest and the poetic imagery of Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.” This personal connection led him to conceptualise the elevated walkway as a means to reconnect the public with the natural beauty of the area. The project, sponsored by Sangita Jindal and JSW Steel, was first presented to Aaditya Thackeray, who endorsed the best design option. The final structure incorporates steel columns every six metres, creating a V-shaped support system, with additional features including handrails and viewing galleries. Notably, one gallery is positioned to provide panoramic views of Chowpatty Beach.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the walkway is designed to be educational, with plans to include informational signage about local tree species. Kadri highlighted that the walkway will also include a ticketing system to manage visitor numbers effectively and ensure safety. “While the tickets are for crowd control and safety, the walkway will be fully accessible, including for wheelchair users,” Kadri emphasised. The project’s design prioritises simplicity and sustainability, making maintenance straightforward and aligning with the natural environment. Kadri also hinted at future public projects, promising further developments that will adhere to the same principles of thoughtful design and community engagement.
