Union Minister Piyush Goyal has urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to prioritise the desilting of two vital lakes, Tulsi and Vihar, as part of a strategy to augment Mumbai’s water supply. These lakes, which are among the seven major reservoirs supplying water to the city, are critical to meeting the increasing demands of the population. Goyal also directed the BMC to take similar action for Bhatsa and Modak Sagar dams, which contribute significantly to the water supply of the city.
The desilting instructions were issued during a meeting with Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and senior civic officials on Wednesday. Goyal’s proactive engagement aims to ensure the uninterrupted supply of water to Mumbai, particularly during times of water shortages. The city, which heavily depends on its lakes and dams, has faced challenges in recent years with growing concerns over silt accumulation and reduced water storage capacity in its reservoirs.
In addition to his focus on water management, Goyal advocated for the speedy construction of several crucial infrastructure projects. He proposed partially opening the T-shaped flyover at Mith Chowky, Malad by the end of this month. This flyover is expected to ease traffic in the area, with the full bridge set to be operational by December. The completion of this project is vital for improving connectivity in the northern parts of the city. Goyal also highlighted the upcoming coastal road project between Versova and Bhayander, stressing the need to fast-track its development. He revealed that discussions with the state’s forest minister and the principal secretary have been initiated to expedite the necessary clearances for the second phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road project. Once the NOCs are obtained, the proposal will be sent to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests for approval, aiming to accelerate the progress of this major infrastructure initiative.
Additionally, Goyal proposed the Sports Authority of India (SAI) create a sports complex on a 37-acre plot in Kandivali, a western suburb of Mumbai. Once completed, this facility will boost the city’s sporting infrastructure and provide more opportunities for athletes. In addressing both immediate water concerns and long-term infrastructure needs, Goyal’s directives reflect a comprehensive approach to supporting Mumbai’s development and ensuring sustainable growth in key sectors.
