In a relief for Mumbai’s daily commuters, Western Railway announced there will be no mega block on its suburban section on Sunday, October 20, 2024. This comes as Western Railway (WR) intensifies preparations to tackle the surge in passengers during the upcoming festive season.
With the festive season—spanning Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja—just around the corner, WR has unveiled its plan to run more than 100 special trains. According to an official release, WR will operate 102 festival-special trains, making 2,130 trips from October to December 2024, the highest across Indian Railways for the season. Indian Railways, on a national level, has rolled out an impressive 6,556 special trains, a significant increase from last year’s 4,429, ensuring passengers across the country can travel smoothly. WR alone accounts for 106 special trains, covering destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, North India, and the North-East.
Notably, WR’s festive trains will be a major relief for Mumbai-based passengers traveling to regions like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, which experience the heaviest demand during these festivals. Millions of passengers flock to their hometowns during this time, and ticket demand often leads to waiting lists months in advance. WR’s extensive arrangements will ease the journey for thousands traveling from Mumbai to Surat, Udhna, Vapi, and other key stations in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek stated, “These additional services will significantly ease passenger movement and ensure a smooth and comfortable journey. The number of trains has been increased to meet the huge surge in demand.” The Indian Railways’ move to bolster its special train count this year underscores the increasing reliance on public transport during festivals. By providing a seamless travel experience, it aims to accommodate a growing number of festive travellers and reduce the strain on regular services.
