Mumbai’s SCLR Extension Project Faces Minor Delays

The Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension project, a much-awaited infrastructure development in Mumbai, is inching closer to completion. With only 100 meters of the suspension span remaining to be installed, the project is on the cusp of being fully operational. This new route is expected to significantly ease traffic flow between Kurla and Vakola, enhancing connectivity across Mumbai’s bustling corridors. With approvals in place, the final stretch is set to open to the public on January 1, 2025.

The SCLR extension, a 4.2-kilometer stretch, is designed to alleviate traffic congestion between Kurla and Vakola, two of Mumbai’s busiest areas. Once completed, it will connect key junctions like Kapadia Nagar, Ambedkar Chowk, University Junction, and BKC Junction. However, the project has faced several delays, primarily due to land acquisition issues, particularly related to defense land. Recently, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) made a significant payment to the defense authorities, paving the way for the final phase of construction.

While the SCLR extension is nearing completion, another related project, the establishment of a signal school under the SCLR flyover at Amar Mahal Junction, has been delayed. The project, inspired by a successful initiative in Thane, aims to provide education to underprivileged children. However, due to various factors, including the recent Lok Sabha elections, the project has been postponed. Once fully operational, the SCLR extension is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce travel time for commuters in Mumbai. The completion of this project is a positive step towards addressing the city’s growing infrastructure needs and enhancing its overall connectivity.
