The Maharashtra Forest Department is investing Rs 120 crore in a high-tech CCTV surveillance network to monitor mangrove ecosystems across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This ambitious project aims to deter illegal activities such as land grabbing and deforestation, which have posed a serious threat to these ecologically crucial areas. The surveillance system will cover 195 “sensitive” mangrove zones, encompassing regions like Mumbai, Thane, Bhiwandi, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and Uran.
Equipped with 669 cameras and a centralized monitoring system, the network will provide real-time data on activities within these areas, enabling authorities to respond swiftly to any suspicious behavior. The project also includes advanced features like Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), integrated with various government databases. This will help identify individuals and vehicles involved in illegal activities, facilitating their prosecution. The decision to invest in this surveillance network comes in response to growing concerns about the destruction of mangroves in Mumbai. These ecosystems play a crucial role in coastal protection, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration.
However, they have faced increasing pressure from urbanization, industrial development, and illegal activities. Environmental activists have long been advocating for stronger measures to safeguard Mumbai’s mangroves. The new CCTV network is a significant step towards addressing this issue and ensuring the long-term survival of these vital ecosystems. While the project is expected to have a deterrent effect on illegal activities, it is also important to address the underlying causes of mangrove destruction.
This includes strengthening enforcement mechanisms, promoting sustainable development practices, and raising public awareness about the importance of preserving these ecosystems. The Rs 120 crore investment in CCTV surveillance is a testament to the government’s commitment to protecting Mumbai’s environment. By providing a watchful eye over the city’s mangroves, this initiative offers hope for the future of these vital green spaces.
