Mumbai’s CSMT Set for Transformation 36-Hour Rail Upgrade Ahead on June 1-2

Mumbai, India – In a bid to modernise its infrastructure and enhance commuter experience, the Central Railway (CR) is set to embark on a transformative journey with the proposed 36-hour railway block slated for June 1-2.

The focal point of this endeavour is the venerable Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), a cornerstone of India’s railway legacy, which is poised to undergo a comprehensive overhaul. With an estimated cost of ₹50 crore, this ambitious project aims to address critical deficiencies while fortifying CSMT’s position as a pivotal hub in Mumbai’s bustling transportation network. Scheduled to commence post-midnight on June 1, the blockade will necessitate the cancellation of approximately 600 services across the Central and Harbour lines, affecting both local and long-distance commuters. The crux of the upgrade revolves around augmenting CSMT’s operational capabilities, chiefly through the expansion of platforms and modernisation of track infrastructure. Notably, platforms 10 and 14 are slated for extension to accommodate trains boasting up to 24 coaches, a move poised to bolster capacity by over 20%. Furthermore, the transition from conventional route relay interlocking to electronic interlocking systems promises to streamline operations and enhance efficiency.

Beyond platform extensions, the overhaul encompasses a spectrum of initiatives aimed at revitalising CSMT’s facilities. Yard remodelling, construction of essential service buildings, and the dismantling of outdated infrastructure are among the pivotal undertakings slated for execution. These endeavours collectively signify a paradigm shift towards a more agile, responsive railway ecosystem. Amidst escalating demand and burgeoning passenger footfall, the imperative for rejuvenating CSMT is underscored by the challenges posed during peak travel seasons. By modernising its infrastructure, CR endeavours to alleviate congestion woes and enhance the overall commuter experience. In the interim, disruptions to Harbour line services persist, attributed to speed restrictions imposed near CSMT following recent derailments.
