Mumbai’s Chheda Nagar Flyover Set to Open Soon

Mumbai’s notorious traffic congestion at the Chheda Nagar Junction on the Eastern Express Highway is poised for significant relief with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) projecting the completion of the new flyover’s south-north carriageway by October.

This development is a critical component of the extensive Chheda Nagar Junction improvement initiative, which has been in progress since 2017. The improvement project has already achieved several key milestones. Notably, in March 2022, an elevated road was inaugurated, linking the existing north-south Chheda Nagar flyover to the Amar Mahal flyover. This was followed by the opening of another critical flyover in April 2023, which spans from the Indian Oil Corporation on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR) to the Thane-bound lanes.

These enhancements are crucial for managing the high traffic volume at this junction, which handles over 60,000 vehicles daily. The completion of the south-north carriageway is expected to further alleviate congestion and streamline traffic flow, significantly benefiting daily commuters and reducing travel times across the Eastern Express Highway.

The MMRDA’s strategic upgrades at Chheda Nagar are part of a broader effort to modernise Mumbai’s infrastructure and address chronic traffic bottlenecks. The final phase of the flyover project is anticipated to bring notable improvements to the junction’s traffic dynamics, potentially setting a precedent for future infrastructure projects aimed at mitigating Mumbai’s traffic challenges.
