In a strategic move aimed at optimising public transportation in Mumbai, officials are considering significant tweaks to the route of the city’s second underground metro corridor, Metro 11, stretching from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Wadala.

The proposed modifications aim to enhance connectivity to heavily congested areas in south Mumbai, potentially reshaping the urban mobility landscape. Sources within the Maharashtra government have revealed that a fresh proposal is underway to adjust the alignment of the 12.74-kilometre Metro 11 corridor. The revision is based on assessments of technical and financial feasibility outlined in the detailed project report (DPR). A decision on the finalised route adjustments is anticipated by June, pending comprehensive evaluation.

The proposed realignment seeks to extend Metro 11’s coverage to key areas such as Crawford Market, Mohammad Ali Road, Gateway of India, Fort, and Byculla, among others. This strategic shift aims to address the pressing need for improved public transportation options in densely populated urban hubs, facilitating smoother movement of commuters. The current DPR outlines 11 stations along the Metro 11 route, predominantly situated on Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) land. However, officials argue that accessibility to these stations for citizens is paramount, prompting a reassessment of the existing station layout. The envisioned revisions are poised to optimise station placement in alignment with commuter needs and urban development objectives.

The estimated ₹16,000-crore project is slated for completion within approximately five years, with operational commencement projected by 2030. Upon implementation, Metro 11 will complement the existing underground Metro 3 (Seepz-Bandra-Colaba) line, bolstering north-south connectivity across Mumbai’s western and eastern suburbs. Additionally, plans are underway to integrate Metro 11 with both Metro 3 and CSMT suburban rail stations through a subway network, further enhancing intermodal connectivity. Anticipated benefits include a reduction in reliance on buses and taxis along the Byculla-CSMT-Colaba corridor, as well as alleviating congestion on suburban rail networks. Managed by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), the Metro 11 project extends from Wadala to Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavli-Gaimukh, serving as an extension of the Metro 4 and 4A lines. The proposed route adjustments aim to streamline urban transit options, offering commuters seamless connectivity from Thane’s Ghodbunder Road to south Mumbai.
