Mumbai Bans Sky Lanterns for Diwali Safety

As Diwali approaches, the Mumbai Police has taken a proactive step to ensure public safety by imposing a ban on sky lanterns and restricting the use of firecrackers. The decision, driven by concerns over potential fire hazards and property damage, has sparked a debate between those who prioritize tradition and those who advocate for safety.

The ban on sky lanterns, which will be in effect from October 23 to November 21, is a direct response to the risks associated with these aerial devices. In 2015, a sky lantern was reportedly responsible for a fire that damaged a 36-story building under construction in Malad East, highlighting the potential dangers they pose. In addition to the sky lantern ban, the police have also issued orders prohibiting the use of fireworks near petroleum companies. This measure aims to prevent accidents and protect critical infrastructure. The restricted areas include bottling plants, terminal areas, and refineries, ensuring that sensitive locations remain safe during the festive season.

While the Mumbai Police’s actions are undoubtedly aimed at safeguarding the city’s residents, the ban on sky lanterns and restrictions on firecrackers have raised concerns among some who view these traditions as an integral part of Diwali celebrations. The dilemma faced by the authorities is a delicate balancing act between preserving cultural heritage and ensuring public safety. As Diwali approaches, it is imperative for citizens to comply with the safety guidelines imposed by the Mumbai Police. By doing so, we can collectively contribute to a peaceful and joyous festive season, free from the threat of accidents and property damage.
