Mumbai Airport Sees 16% Surge in Passenger Traffic to 52.8 Million in FY24
The Mumbai Airport, officially known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), has reported a significant uptick in passenger traffic for the fiscal year 2024.
According to the airport operator, the total number of passengers surged by 16% year-on-year, reaching 52.8 million travelers. This notable growth is a testament to the airport’s increasing popularity and the revival of air travel demand following the pandemic-induced downturn. Owned jointly by the Adani Group and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), CSMIA has been a crucial hub for domestic and international travel, serving millions of passengers annually. In the previous fiscal year, the airport handled 43.9 million passengers, indicating a substantial increase in traffic over the course of just one year. The calculation of passenger numbers is based on the movement of aircraft at both arrival and departure terminals, ensuring an accurate representation of foot traffic at the airport. Out of the total passenger count of 52.8 million, approximately 26 million passengers arrived at the airport, while 26.7 million departed. This balanced distribution underscores the airport’s role as a key gateway for both inbound and outbound travel.
Notably, both domestic and international passenger volumes experienced a notable uptick, reflecting the overall recovery and resilience of the aviation sector. The fiscal year 2024 also witnessed a 12% increase in air traffic movements (ATMs), with a total of 324,972 movements recorded compared to 290,387 in the preceding year. Additionally, the airport handled over 40.7 million bags during the fiscal year, marking a substantial 31% growth from the previous year’s figure of 31 million bags processed. Overall, the robust growth in passenger traffic, air traffic movements, and baggage handling reaffirms CSMIA’s position as a vital aviation hub in India. As air travel continues to rebound and demand strengthens, the airport is poised to play an even more significant role in facilitating seamless travel experiences for millions of passengers.
