Mumbai Airport Completes Runway Maintenance Successfully

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai successfully concluded its annual post-monsoon runway maintenance on October 17, 2024. The comprehensive maintenance work, conducted on both runways, was completed within the scheduled six-hour closure, ensuring minimal disruption to airport operations. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued well in advance to allow airlines and stakeholders to adjust their schedules accordingly.

The maintenance was essential to address the wear and tear caused by the monsoon season, ensuring the runway infrastructure remains safe and operational for aircraft. Key maintenance activities included the installation of runway edge lights, clearing debris from underground ducts, validating the strength of the Runway End Safety Area (RESA), and repairing runway intersections. Additionally, the team conducted a thorough inspection of aeronautical ground lights, drainage systems, and critical cables.

The successful completion of the maintenance work demonstrates CSMIA’s commitment to passenger safety and operational efficiency. The airport is now well-prepared to handle the increased passenger traffic during the upcoming peak travel seasons. The post-monsoon maintenance is a crucial aspect of ensuring the safe and efficient operation of CSMIA. The monsoon season can cause significant damage to the runway infrastructure, including erosion, cracks, and debris accumulation. Regular maintenance is essential to prevent these issues from affecting airport operations.

By conducting thorough inspections and repairs, CSMIA can identify and address potential safety hazards before they become a problem. This proactive approach helps to maintain the airport’s high standards of safety and reliability. The successful completion of the maintenance work also reflects the dedication and expertise of the CSMIA team. The airport’s engineering and airside teams worked diligently to ensure that all necessary repairs were completed on time and to the highest standards. Overall, the successful completion of the post-monsoon runway maintenance is a positive development for CSMIA and the city of Mumbai. The airport is now well-equipped to handle the increased passenger traffic and maintain its reputation as a world-class aviation hub.
