The ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has taken a transformative turn, with the Indian Railways’ SMART initiative focusing on upgrading four key stations along the route. Virar and Thane in Maharashtra, as well as Sabarmati and Surat in Gujarat, are set to be revamped into bustling, sustainable urban hubs. The SMART (Station Area Development) project envisions these stations as activity centres, not only facilitating smoother transit but also providing a range of modern amenities for travellers and local communities. This integration with metro, bus, and taxi services will streamline urban mobility, improve air quality, and ensure efficient travel across the region. Expected to become operational in the next decade, these upgraded stations will serve as focal points for local development, addressing civic needs while providing much-needed urban connectivity.
The SMART development follows the principles of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), a globally acclaimed urban planning approach. With TOD, areas around the four bullet train stations will include a balanced mix of office spaces, educational centres, hotels, and healthcare facilities within an 800-metre radius, accessible by foot. This blend of land use is designed to stimulate local economies by attracting businesses and generating jobs, supporting regional economic growth through improved infrastructure and access to essential services. The integration also aims to reduce road congestion, offering greener mobility alternatives and supporting India’s broader sustainability goals in transportation.
Enhancing the long-term impact, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is overseeing the development with a phased approach. Within the first decade, Area 2 surrounding these stations will undergo major connectivity and infrastructure upgrades. From year 10 to year 20, the state government, along with city planning authorities, will lead further urban development, including pedestrian-friendly walkways, drop-off zones, and extended road networks. By aligning these initiatives with civic needs, the government expects to foster self-sustaining communities that balance residential, commercial, and recreational spaces.
With sustainability at the core of the SMART project, the development not only targets reduced traffic emissions through integrated public transport options but also addresses pressing environmental issues. Green spaces and energy-efficient facilities will be key components, aligning with India’s urban environmental targets. By curbing carbon footprints, these developments are poised to set a new standard in India’s transportation and urban infrastructure, offering future-proof solutions to urban growth challenges. Through the integration of sustainable infrastructure, SMART’s bullet train stations aim to redefine connectivity, enhance urban living, and make positive strides toward a sustainable urban future.
