Central Railway (CR) has remodelled the Matheran toy train to mirror its original steam locomotive charm from 1907.

This initiative, aimed at enhancing the nostalgic appeal of the popular tourist attraction, involves retrofitting the current diesel engine to resemble a historic steam engine. Despite the vintage exterior, the train will continue to operate on diesel, ensuring efficient and reliable performance. The newly revamped locomotive is set to commence operations in June, traversing the scenic 21-kilometre route from Neral to Matheran through the lush forests of the Western Ghats. The train comprises six coaches, including three second-class coaches, one vistadome coach, and two second class-cum-luggage vans. Ticket prices range from ₹50 to ₹160 for ordinary class, while the luxury vistadome experience is priced at ₹1,352.

On May 16, the redesigned locomotive was transported to Matheran by road for final assembly. CR officials emphasised that the transformation of the NDM-1 narrow-gauge locomotive was driven by a desire to elevate the mountain railway travel experience while preserving the iconic toy train’s heritage essence.

“A special team of engineers and technicians at Parel workshop have modified the steam engine hood and made necessary changes so as to ensure smooth running of the engine, and at the same time maintain the heritage look as well. The engine has been painted in red and green to retain its original look,” said a CR official.

The intricate process of achieving the heritage look involved several technical modifications. These included the removal of existing engine hoods, manufacturing and fitting a new steam loco-like hood, modifying the diesel engine, and installing a steam vapour and sound-producing system to emulate the classic steam engine ambience. The Neral-Matheran toy train, running at a leisurely speed of 10-15 kmph, takes approximately three hours to complete the picturesque journey, making it a favourite among tourists, especially during the summer vacations.

Safety and passenger comfort have been a priority for CR, which has undertaken extensive infrastructural improvements over the years. These enhancements include upgrading the tracks, reinforcing barricades, and strengthening walls along the route. In addition, CR plans to introduce sleeping pods in Matheran, designed to provide tourists with comfort and privacy. These pods will feature modern amenities such as mobile charging facilities, locker room services, fire alarms, intercom systems, and deluxe toilet and bathroom facilities.

“In the last week 1,481 passengers have travelled between Neral and Matheran registering occupancy of 99% while 1,304 passengers have used it on the Matheran-Neral route with an occupancy of 88%,” said another CR official.

As a precautionary measure, the Neral-Matheran line remains closed during the monsoon season. However, shuttle services between Aman Lodge and Matheran continue to operate, ensuring connectivity even during adverse weather conditions. This heritage-inspired makeover is expected to boost tourism and offer a unique, nostalgic travel experience, attracting railway aficionados and casual tourists alike to the historic Matheran toy train route.
