Malad’s T-Shaped Flyover Nears Completion, January Rollout Expected

Mumbai’s Malad residents can look forward to smoother commutes as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) completes a significant milestone in the construction of the T-shaped flyover. With the installation of girders finalised, the 800-metre-long bridge is on track to be fully operational by the first week of January 2024, bringing much-needed relief to one of the city’s busiest traffic bottlenecks.

The flyover, originating near the Girdhar Park Bridge, spans Malad Creek and Mith Chowky, with eastern access near St. Joseph’s School and western connections to Link Road. Currently, only east-to-west traffic is accommodated, but its full opening will allow southbound vehicles to connect towards Andheri, Juhu, and the airport seamlessly. While catering to two-wheelers and light motor vehicles, heavy vehicles and buses will remain restricted, ensuring smoother and safer traffic flow. BMC initiated work on this project after the operationalisation of the elevated Mumbai Metro Line 2A, which runs directly above the flyover. Construction was previously delayed due to height adjustments required for the metro line. With girders installed, upcoming tasks include asphalt road laying and waterproofing, anticipated to take over a month to complete.

This flyover is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion in Malad and its neighbouring areas, enhancing connectivity between Mumbai’s western suburbs. However, delays over the years due to metro planning and construction complexities highlight the intricate balance required between urban development projects. As the January completion date approaches, commuters and stakeholders await a smoother traffic experience. The flyover’s operationalisation marks another step in Mumbai’s evolving urban infrastructure landscape, balancing progress with efficiency.
