Maharashtra has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey, with rooftop solar installations under the Pradhanmantri Suryaghar Muft Bijali Yojna surpassing the 100 MW mark. According to a statement from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. (MSEDCL), the scheme has successfully facilitated the installation of 25,086 rooftop solar systems, accumulating a total capacity of 101.18 MW.

Launched in February 2024, this ambitious initiative is supported by the Central Government, which provides a maximum subsidy of INR 78,000 for a 3 kW solar plant. MSEDCL Managing Director Lokesh Chandra highlighted the financial assistance provided under the scheme, stating, “We have allocated INR 160 crore in subsidies to the 25,086 consumers participating in the rooftop solar programme. These subsidies have been directly credited to the beneficiaries’ accounts.” The rooftop solar installations allow consumers to generate their own electricity, which can be sold to MSEDCL or used to offset their monthly power bills.

Excess power generated can lead to zero electricity bills or potentially earn additional income for the households. This dual benefit not only enhances energy security for consumers but also contributes to overall energy efficiency. Deputy Chief Minister and State Energy Minister Devendra Fadnavis has emphasised the need for the rapid implementation of the scheme, which aims to provide 300 units of free power to one crore households nationwide. In Maharashtra, the target is to reach 20 lakh households. The Central Government has allocated INR 75,000 crore for the scheme’s execution across the country.

The successful scaling of rooftop solar capacity in Maharashtra underscores the state’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and demonstrates significant progress towards its renewable energy targets. The initiative reflects a broader strategy to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources and promote clean energy alternatives, positioning Maharashtra as a leader in the nation’s green energy transition.
