In a major leap towards clean energy and green mobility, India has inaugurated its first-ever hydrogen fuelling station in Leh, Ladakh. The facility, built by infrastructure company Amara Raja Infra for the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), was officially opened on November 24, 2024, by Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar. This groundbreaking development is poised to support India’s vision for a sustainable and emission-free future.
Located 3,400 meters above sea level, the hydrogen fuelling station has the capacity to produce 80 kg of green hydrogen daily. The facility, which took two years to complete, is designed to operate in extreme environmental conditions, with temperatures ranging from -25°C to 30°C. This achievement is a testament to the technological advancements in the field of green hydrogen and the commitment to addressing the challenges posed by India’s diverse geographical conditions. The station will play a crucial role in promoting emission-free transportation in the Leh region, a vital step in India’s transition to green energy. The establishment of the hydrogen fuelling station also aligns with the broader objectives of the government’s National Hydrogen Energy Mission, aimed at developing hydrogen as a clean, sustainable energy source for the future.
As part of this initiative, NTPC has also introduced five hydrogen fuel cell buses operating in and around Leh, marking another milestone in the development of green mobility in the region. The success of the Leh hydrogen fuelling station is expected to serve as a model for similar facilities across India, contributing significantly to the country’s transition to a hydrogen-based energy economy.
