Innovative RoRo Services Set to Transform Mumbai Commute Between Bhayandar and Vasai

In a significant development for Mumbai’s transportation landscape, trial Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) services connecting Bhayandar and Vasai are set to commence on February 20, with regular services slated to begin on the following day. This marks the second RoRo service in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), following the first one initiated in Raigad district between Ferry Wharf and Mandwa.

RoRo Vessel

The RoRo vessel, facilitated by Suvaranadurg Shipping and Marine Services Private Limited under a three-month operational agreement with the Mumbai Maritime Board (MMB), is capable of accommodating 33 cars and 100 passengers. The introduction of this service aims to provide a convenient and efficient alternative for commuters in the region.

Commencing at 6:45 am and concluding at 6:45 pm, the Vasai to Bhayandar ferry service will operate eight times daily. Notably, there will be a brief service hiatus from 12:45 pm to 2:15 pm for lunch, optimising operational efficiency.

Suvaranadurg Shipping and Marine Services Private Limited, a seasoned operator with a track record in managing vessels at various locations, has been entrusted with the operational responsibilities of the RoRo service. The company’s expertise, demonstrated in locations such as Rajpuri, Bankot, Dabhale, and Jaigad, underscores their proficiency in managing maritime transport services. To facilitate a seamless transition for commuters, the pricing structure has been strategically devised. A nominal fee of ₹60 will be charged for bikes, ₹100 for rickshaws, and ₹180 for cars. Adult passengers will incur a fee of ₹30, while children will be ticketed at ₹15 per journey.

RoRo Vessel

While these RoRo vessels resemble those commonly used in Goa, it is worth noting that the Government has subsidised river navigation, making travel on RoRo vessels in Goa free for commuters. The Mumbai Maritime Board emphasizes that this mode of transport has the potential to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution. Additionally, during high tides, the RoRo vessel can accomplish the crossing in just ten minutes, providing a swift and efficient transportation solution.

The introduction of RoRo services between Bhayandar and Vasai signifies a forward-looking initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity, streamlining commutes, and contributing to a more sustainable and efficient urban transportation system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
