Indian Railways Sets New Record With Over 957 Lakh Passengers Travelled During Diwali and Chhath Puja

Indian Railways has once again proven its mettle as the backbone of India’s transportation network, especially during peak travel seasons. The recent Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals witnessed a surge in passenger traffic, with over 957 lakh non-suburban passengers opting for rail travel. This figure surpasses the previous year’s record of 923 lakh passengers, highlighting the growing reliance on Indian Railways for festive travel.

To accommodate the unprecedented demand, Indian Railways deployed a massive operation, running over 7,600 special trains during the festive period. This represents a significant increase of 73% compared to the previous year. The railway network’s ability to scale up its operations to meet the surge in demand is a testament to its resilience and efficiency. The peak travel day, November 4, 2024, saw a record-breaking 120 lakh passengers boarding Indian Railways trains. This historic milestone underscores the immense popularity of rail travel, particularly during festive seasons when millions of Indians embark on journeys to their hometowns to celebrate with their loved ones.

To ensure a smooth and comfortable travel experience for passengers, Indian Railways implemented a range of measures. Special control rooms were set up at various levels to monitor train operations and address any issues that may arise. Additionally, the railway network deployed additional staff to handle the increased passenger load and to assist passengers with queries and guidance. The successful handling of the festive season passenger rush is a significant achievement for Indian Railways. It demonstrates the railway network’s ability to adapt to changing demands and to provide reliable and efficient transportation services to millions of Indians. As the country continues to grow and develop, Indian Railways will play a crucial role in connecting people and places, driving economic growth, and fostering social cohesion.
