The Haryana government is making strides towards addressing rural housing needs, unveiling a blueprint for the allocation of 100 square yard plots under the Mukhyamantri Gramin Awas Yojna. This ambitious initiative seeks to provide secure, self-owned land to low-income families across villages, giving them the foundation to build safe and dignified homes. Over 5,00,000 applications have already poured in from individuals across the state, and two lakh eligible families are expected to benefit in the initial phase of this housing initiative, ensuring their dream of home ownership moves closer to reality.
According to officials, the scheme is being spearheaded by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s administration with active oversight from J Ganesan, Director General of the Department of Housing for All. At a recent review meeting, Ganesan outlined the scheme’s focus on improving the living standards of rural families lacking secure housing. Under this initiative, eligible beneficiaries will receive plots of 100 square yards in villages, an asset which is expected to significantly elevate their quality of life. Further support will be available under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural) to assist in constructing homes on these plots, underscoring the government’s commitment to both immediate housing needs and long-term stability.
Emphasising the importance of essential amenities, Chief Minister Saini and his team have mandated that the allocated plots will include robust infrastructure and civic facilities, ensuring that beneficiaries can access paved roads, electricity, clean water, streetlights, and green spaces. This approach reflects an understanding of the wider impact of housing security on community well-being and urban sustainability. During a recent meeting attended by Development and Panchayat Minister Krishan Lal Panwar and Urban Local Bodies Minister Vipul Goel, the government reaffirmed its dedication to creating cohesive rural communities equipped with essential urban infrastructure.
In alignment with sustainability goals, this housing scheme also aligns with broader efforts to manage urban expansion by enhancing rural living standards, potentially reducing migration to urban areas. In addition to the Mukhyamantri Gramin Awas Yojna, 6,618 flats developed by private firms for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category will soon be distributed in eight districts under the Mukhyamantri Shehri Awas Yojana. Haryana’s comprehensive housing strategy reflects the state’s dual approach to urban and rural development, aiming to address housing issues across all income brackets while promoting sustainable, inclusive growth.
