GRSE Kicks Off Advanced Research Vessel Construction

In a significant move towards bolstering India’s oceanographic and polar research capabilities, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Limited, a renowned Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Defence, has officially commenced the steel-cutting for the construction of an Advanced Ocean Research Vessel (ORV). The vessel is being developed for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) in a deal worth Rs 840 crore, signed in July 2024.

The steel-cutting ceremony, a crucial milestone in shipbuilding projects, was held recently and was attended by key dignitaries, including Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, along with GRSE CMD Cmde PR Hari, senior GRSE officials, and representatives from NCPOR. The commencement of the vessel’s construction marks the beginning of a significant chapter in India’s quest to expand its oceanographic research capabilities and scientific exploration.

The ORV, set to measure 89.5 metres in length, 18.8 metres in width, and 12.5 metres in depth, will be equipped with advanced research technology to support a wide range of scientific activities. Designed for an operational depth of up to 6,000 meters, this cutting-edge vessel will provide vital data on oceanic conditions and help in the mapping of deep-sea environments. Capable of reaching speeds of 14 knots, the ORV will be equipped with state-of-the-art geophysical and biological sampling systems, allowing it to conduct detailed seismic surveys, water profiling, and biological sampling using advanced CTD techniques.

Additionally, the vessel will play a crucial role in seabed studies, atmospheric research, and the deployment of submersibles like Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). These capabilities will significantly enhance India’s ability to carry out complex research in some of the world’s most challenging environments. GRSE, which has long been recognised for its proficiency in building specialised naval vessels and research ships, currently manages a portfolio of 43 active projects, including the construction of warships for the Indian Navy and hybrid ferries for West Bengal. The ORV project is yet another feather in GRSE’s cap, further cementing its role as a key player in India’s maritime and defence sectors. With this project, India is poised to strengthen its commitment to scientific research, particularly in oceanography, and improve its standing as a leader in the exploration of polar and oceanic regions.
