CSMIA Receives Energy Efficiency Award, Targets Net-Zero by 2029

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has been recognised with the esteemed Energy Efficient Unit Award for Excellence in Energy Management at the 25th CII National Awards, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Hyderabad. This accolade acknowledges CSMIA’s significant strides in sustainable energy management, reflecting its efforts to mitigate its environmental footprint while serving millions of passengers annually.

In recent years, CSMIA has undertaken various measures to optimise energy consumption, achieving an 8.26% reduction in net energy usage over the past six years, despite a steady increase in passenger traffic. The airport’s energy-saving initiatives have cumulatively saved approximately 8.7 million kilowatt-hours (kWh), underscoring its consistent and sustainable approach to operational efficiency. These efforts are crucial as CSMIA sets its sights on becoming a net-zero emissions airport by 2029. Among CSMIA’s innovative strategies is the introduction of ‘Taxiway Z,’ a project designed to enhance On-Time Performance (OTP) and reduce aircraft taxi times.

By streamlining the process of entering and exiting the runway, this initiative has led to a significant reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The airport’s Flexible-use Apron system has further optimised taxi operations, contributing to lower emissions and a more sustainable operational model. The airport has also been proactive in investing in energy-efficient projects, replacing outdated, conventional equipment with advanced, energy-saving technologies. These efforts highlight CSMIA’s commitment to long-term sustainability, aligning with global trends in the aviation sector towards greener operations.

A spokesperson for CSMIA commented on the award, stating, “This recognition marks a pivotal moment in CSMIA’s journey towards a sustainable future. Our focus on transformative, long-term initiatives, supported by the diligent efforts of our team, has enabled us to achieve this milestone. Sustainability is integral to CSMIA’s vision, and as we strive to achieve net-zero emissions by 2029, this award further strengthens our commitment to operational efficiency and renewable energy.” This recognition not only boosts CSMIA’s reputation as a leader in sustainable aviation but also serves as an example for other airports aiming to reduce their environmental impact. With ongoing investments in green technology and infrastructure, CSMIA is well on its way to achieving its ambitious sustainability goals, setting a benchmark for the industry.
