Central Railway (CR) is set to implement a revised timetable for its main line in August, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and reduce congestion without increasing the total number of services. This strategic overhaul is designed to address bottlenecks and improve punctuality on the fast corridor shared by both local and long-distance trains.
One of the key adjustments includes relocating five pairs of local trains from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Dadar. This shift is expected to alleviate congestion between CSMT and Dadar, thereby improving the punctuality of services on this critical stretch. A senior CR official remarked that this adjustment would significantly enhance overall operational efficiency. Presently, Central Railway operates 894 services on its main line, comprising 623 slow services and 271 fast services, many of which originate from CSMT.
Additionally, CR is considering extending the services of six CSMT-Thane locals to Kalyan. This extension aims to accommodate the burgeoning population beyond Thane, which has witnessed substantial growth over the past few decades. By increasing connectivity to Kalyan, CR intends to better serve the transportation needs of these expanding regions. Moreover, 24 slow corridor services currently operating from Dadar will be shifted to Parel, raising the total number of services from Parel to 46. This change is intended to help decongest Dadar, providing more service options for passengers from Parel and improving overall commuter experience.
Despite these adjustments, no new services have been added to the timetable due to the lack of available space for additional trains. These strategic changes are designed to optimise the existing infrastructure and enhance the overall efficiency of Central Railway’s operations. The revised timetable reflects CR’s commitment to addressing commuter concerns and improving service reliability.
