In anticipation of the upcoming monsoon season, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a proactive initiative aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of residents.

Through the issuance of 1,855 notices, the BMC has urged citizens, housing societies, government and semi-government organisations, and private establishments to undertake scientific pruning of trees on their premises. This concerted effort seeks to minimise disruptions and potential hazards posed by overgrown or hazardous trees during inclement weather conditions. The BMC’s emphasis on tree pruning aligns with its commitment to maintaining public safety and enhancing the urban environment. While the corporation diligently tends to trees in public spaces within its jurisdiction, it recognises the shared responsibility of caring for trees on private properties. By engaging property owners and users in the pruning process, the BMC aims to foster a culture of collective stewardship towards urban greenery. Within the BMC jurisdiction, there are approximately 29.75 lakh trees, with a significant portion located on private and government-owned properties. Notably, 1.85 lakh trees line the roadsides, presenting a unique set of pruning challenges. To address these concerns, the garden department conducted a comprehensive survey of roadside trees, identifying those in need of pruning to mitigate potential risks.
As of April 5, the garden department has pruned branches of 12,467 trees, with completion expected by June 7. This meticulous approach to pre-monsoon preparations encompasses a range of tasks, including the removal of dead or hazardous trees, trimming of overgrown branches, and replanting initiatives. Additionally, efforts are underway to fill tree trunks and hollows, balance tree structures, and address pest infestations, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation governing tree preservation and maintenance. By proactively engaging stakeholders and promoting best practices in tree care, the BMC endeavours to create safer and more resilient urban environments. Through collaborative efforts and community participation, the corporation aims to mitigate the impact of natural disasters and enhance the overall quality of life for Mumbai residents.
