Ahmedabad Witnesses Urban Progress Amid Health Challenges

Ahmedabad’s bustling SG Highway, a critical arterial road, will soon feature five new foot-over bridges designed to improve pedestrian safety. These bridges, located at high-traffic points such as ISKCON-Rajpath Club and Nirma University, will each span 50-59 metres and include elevators for accessibility. With pedestrian safety a growing concern, this ₹25 crore project is expected to prevent accidents and enhance connectivity for thousands of daily commuters.

Meanwhile, the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail connecting Ahmedabad to Bhuj has proven immensely popular, attracting over one lakh passengers since its launch in September 2024. Generating ₹3.12 crore in revenue, the rail showcases the increasing shift towards modern, efficient transport solutions. Featuring indigenous technology, its success highlights the need for more such infrastructure to cater to a rapidly urbanising population.

On the sustainability front, AMC’s lake revival initiative aims to restore Sheelaj, Bhadaj, and Thaltej Lakes using treated drainage water. This ₹78.29 lakh project involves a 5 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant to replenish water levels and maintain ecological balance. Interlinking the lakes ensures consistent levels, promoting biodiversity while addressing water scarcity concerns. Such efforts reflect a much-needed shift towards sustainable urban development.

However, rising cases of waterborne diseases underscore gaps in public health infrastructure. In 2024, gastroenteritis cases surged by 42%, while jaundice and typhoid cases nearly doubled. Cholera saw a troubling rise from 95 cases last year to 199. This spike points to inadequate water quality monitoring and calls for urgent civic intervention. As Ahmedabad progresses with its urban transformation, balancing development with public health and sustainability remains a critical challenge.
