Mumbai, a city synonymous with hustle and bustle, is poised to witness a transformative leap in its urban infrastructure. The much-awaited first phase of the Mumbai Metro 3 (Aqua Line) is on the verge of becoming a reality. The 12.34-km stretch, connecting Aarey Colony-JVLR to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is expected to commence operations in the first week of October.

The Aqua Line’s inauguration marks a significant step towards addressing Mumbai’s burgeoning transportation challenges. With a daily ridership estimated to reach 4 lakh, the metro will alleviate traffic congestion, reduce fuel consumption, and improve overall air quality. The project, undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRCL), has received substantial funding from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The first phase of the Aqua Line boasts 10 stations and will offer 96 services daily, running between 6:30 AM and 10:30 PM.  The frequency of trains will be six and a half minutes during peak hours, ensuring efficient commuting for residents and visitors alike. The fares for the initial phase are expected to range between Rs 10 and Rs 50, depending on the distance traveled.

The second phase of the Aqua Line, extending from BKC to Cuffe Parade, is also nearing completion. With 93% of the work already finished, the MMRCL anticipates launching operations by March-April 2025. However, the completion of the final stretches at Worli and Girgaon stations presents some challenges that need to be addressed. The Aqua Line’s impact on Mumbai’s urban landscape is expected to be profound. By providing a reliable and efficient public transport system, the metro will not only reduce traffic congestion but also enhance the city’s overall livability. As Mumbai continues to grow and develop, the Aqua Line will play a crucial role in shaping its future.
